Explaining why Kalen DeBoer's offense will be more 'open' as the schedule gets tougher

Alabama Coach Kalen DeBoer Press Conference | Wisconsin Week

Alabama may have scared a few people on Saturday against USF. Going into the fourth quarter, the game was not out of hand as many expected. Offensive line play was sloppy from the Crimson Tide and Jalen Milroe could not finish drives. Everything got figured out in the fourth quarter with a 42-16 final score not being totally honest.

On3’s JD PicKell is not worried about Alabama though, especially having played well in the fourth quarter. There is a possibility that the offense from head coach Kalen DeBoer has been “vanilla” due to lesser opponents being on the schedule. A seamless plan against Western Kentucky in the opener and eventually, things clicked against USF.

“I think they have a lot more under the hood than what they’ve shown so far,” PicKell said during Wednesday’s episode of The Paul Finebaum Show. “I wouldn’t be surprised if Kalen DeBoer is keeping it pretty vanilla against Western Kentucky, very ho-hum against USF.”

Alabama sees the schedule make a serious jump in competition level, starting Saturday against Wisconsin. A trip to Madison will be the Crimson Tide in Big Ten country for the first time in a long time. DeBoer faced Luke Fickell, a coach known for his solid defenses.

Then there is a bye week before No. 1 Georgia comes to Bryant-Denny Stadium — maybe the most hyped game of the regular season. A top-five matchup between the two is certainly possible and the entire college football world will be watching.

PicKell is confident DeBoer will put his foot on the gas pedal this weekend before pulling out all the stops against Georgia.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a little more wide open against Wisconsin. But by the time Georgia comes down Sept. 28, they’re going to be rocking and rolling. They’re going to show a lot more than what they have, I think, at this point of the year.”
