Georgia State became bowl-eligible in October after beginning the year 6-1 — but they still finished the season with six wins. Dropping its last five games of the regular season, almost nothing has gone right for the Panthers down the home stretch. Still, they have been allowed a chance to enter the offseason on a high note with a win over a respected Aggie squad.
For Utah State, their postseason berth came with high drama in their season finale against New Mexico. It took a double overtime effort for the Aggies to overcome their opponent as quarterback Levi Williams capped his 300+ all-purpose performance with a 13-yard walk-off touchdown.
On3’s Andy Staples broke down what he believes will be the keys to the game — and whether or not Utah State can cover the spread in the final game of their season.
“Quarterbacks Cooper Legas and McCae Hillstead are both hurt for Utah State. Levi Williams got his first start in their season finale,” Staples said. “Will he start again? [Head coach] Blake Anderson has been noncommittal about who’s going to start.”

If Williams doesn’t start, junior Zeke Payne and true freshman Ezra Harris are the only other options for Utah State — neither of which has recorded a single pass this season. After his massive performance against New Mexico — it would lead one to believe Williams should be the starter.
Things aren’t any easier from Georgia State’s side of things, either. Injuries have piled up for the Panthers in recent weeks, which has made Staples’ decision that much easier.
“Georgia State, meanwhile, is missing a dozen players for this final game because of injuries, transfer portal — you name it. I am going with Utah State here in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.”
The opening kickoff between the Aggies and the Panthers is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 22 at 3:30 p.m. ET live on ESPN. It will be the 26th edition of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, and 16th under its current name.
