Fans at the Duke’s Mayo Bowl not only enjoyed an action-packed thriller, but a masked mystery, as well. After Minnesota defeated Virginia Tech 24-10 on Friday, the Duke Mayo Bowl mascot, Tubby, revealed himself to be none other than famed rapper Flavor Flav.

Flavor Flav, under the guise of Tubby, kept fans anxiously waiting all night. The mayonnaise jar-shaped mascot strolled up and down the sidelines during the game, dancing, interacting with fans and, obviously, enjoying mayonnaise.

The Duke’s Mayo Bowl has unsurprisingly doubled down on the latter activity, holding mayo-eating contests and other mayonnaise-related activities throughout the game. Of course, fans aren’t the only ones who get in on the action.

After the game, Minnesota head coach PJ Fleck enjoyed a mayonnaise shower. He wasn’t alone. During the game, ESPN’s broadcasters chowed down on some mayonnaise-dipped chocolate bars.

Whether or not the taste testers went back in for seconds remains a mystery but they certainly won’t be forgetting the experience anytime soon. In an era of over 40 bowl games, the Duke’s Mayo Bowl has found a way to make itself one of the most entertaining spectacles.

Evidently, Flavor Flav wanted to be a part of the fun. Flavor Flav is a founding member of Public Enemy, a rap group that has earned six Grammy Award nominations. Along with his catchy rhymes, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member is known for always donning a large clock necklace.

The bowl game’s off-field antics weren’t the only exhilarating part of the night. The Golden Gophers and Hokies delivered an excellent battle, with the former ultimately emerging victorious.

In the win, Minnesota racked up 403 yards of total offense while holding Virginia Tech to just over half that mark. The Golden Gophers particularly found success in the ground game, amassing 167 rushing yards and 4.6 yards per carry.

With the win, Minnesota finished the 2024 campaign with an 8-5 record. This season was Fleck’s eighth at the helm of the program. Next season, he will look to reach new heights as he returns several key pieces.

However, before Minnesota can focus on next season, it must find success in the offseason. Minnesota players will have five days to enter the transfer portal if they choose to do so. However, Fleck and Co. will continue to be able to recruit out of the transfer portal past that deadline.
