After another riveting round of SEC basketball action over the last week, the conference has named its Players of the Week.

A pair of stars from the old SEC East earn the honors this week, with Florida big man Alex Condon taking home SEC Player of the Week and Georgia big Asa Newell winning SEC Freshman of the Week honors.

Both were crucially important in a big week for their teams.

For Florida, Condon was the key piece in the frontcourt in a week that saw the team post victories over Vanderbilt and No. 1 Auburn (on the road). That was enough to send the team vaulting to the No. 3 ranking in this week’s AP Top 25 poll.

Condon averaged 18.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.0 blocks in the two wins.

He posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the win at Auburn, which was the program’s first-ever win against a No. 1 ranked team on the road. He also added four assists in the win.

Including the game at Vanderbilt, Condon shot a combined 14-of-16 from two-point range last week, earning SEC Player of the Week honors.

Meanwhile, Newell averaged 16.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in games against LSU and No. 22 Mississippi State. He shot 61.1% from the field and 57.1% from 3-point range.

The talented freshman also scored in double figures for the 21st and 22nd time this season. He’s only played in two games this year without scoring in double figures.

Newell scored a game-high 17 points in the win over LSU, then scored 16 points in the game against Mississippi State, earning SEC Freshman of the Week honors.

Florida will return to action this week with games against No. 22 Mississippi State (road) and South Carolina. Georgia is set to take on No. 8 Texas A&M (road) and No. 21 Missouri.
