Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin announced Thursday that head coach Billy Napier would return to Gainesville for the 2025 season. Napier is 15-18 at Florida, sitting at 4-4 toward the end of his third season. He has been firmly on the hot seat since beginning the season 1-2, with lopsided losses to Miami and Texas A&M.

The Gators head to Texas on Saturday. The Longhorns are coming off a bye week and debuted at No. 5 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings earlier this week. After Florida on Saturday, Texas closes out the season with games against Arkansas, Kentucky and Texas A&M. Based on the CFP rankings, visiting the No. 14 Aggies at Kyle Field will be the Longhorns’ toughest remaining regular-season test.

Florida at Texas kicks off at Noon ET on ABC. Joe Tessitore and Jesse Palmer are on the call.

Texas wins 49-17 over Florida and is now 8-1 on the season and 5-1 in the SEC. Florida drops to 4-5 and still needs to wins to reach bowl eligibility. The Longhorns play Arkansas next week while the Gators host LSU.

Ja’Kobi Jackson rushed for a touchdown from seven yards out. The Florida running back has rushed for 116 yards on 19 carries against Texas, averaging 6.1 yards per carry. The Longhorns lead 49-17 with with 8:27 to play.

Florida kicker Trey Smack knocks in the 23-yard field goal to make it 43-3. The Gators have the longest-ever streak without being shut out and now sits at 457 games in a room. The last time they were shut out was Oct. 29, 1988, in a 16-0 loss to Auburn.

Quinn Ewers threw to Isaiah Bond on a screen, and the Alabama transfer wide receiver housed it for a 34-yard touchdown, extending the Longhorns’ lead to 42-0 early in the third quarter. Bond now has three catches for 55 yards and one rush for 44 yards. He’s back to full health after struggling with an injury in the back half of October.

Texas extends lead in just 27 seconds

After taking over possession from its 20-yard line, Texas needed just 27 seconds and four plays to go 80 yards. Quinn Ewers hit Jaydon Blue on a swing route for a 45-yard gain. Two plays later, Ewers found Matthew Golden for another touchdown, this time a 32-yard pass to go up 28-0 before the half.

Ewers has thrown four touchdowns in the first half.

Jaylon Guilbeau delivers key third-down sack

Texas defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau delivered a third-down sack on Florida quarterback Aidan Warner to force a punt and end the 8-play, 35-yard drive. Texas is up 21-0 with under two minutes remaining until halftime.

During the first quarter break, Florida head coach Billy Napier said the Gators needed to “wake up.” The third-year head coach also said they needed quarterback Aidan Warner to settle down.

“Again, let the quarterback settle in a little bit,” Napier said. “We’ve got to wake up, is what we’ve got to do. Ultimately here, we’ll make the decision in the best interest of the team.”

Texas wide receiver Isaiah Bond and defensive back Andrew Mukuba were not listed on Saturday morning’s SEC injury report, meaning they are expected to play. Bond is second on the team in receiving yards with 380, fourth on the team in receptions with 23, and tied for second in receiving touchdowns with four. He also has a rushing touchdown.

Texas defensive tackle Vernon Broughton was listed as out for the first half due to a targeting penalty committed versus Vanderbilt. Florida quarterback DJ Lagway and running back Montrell Johnson Jr. are game-time decisions.

Florida quarterback DJ Lagway is a game-time decision at Texas. The true freshman injured his hamstring last Saturday against Georgia and was carted off the field in the second quarter.

Lagway was diagnosed with a Grade 2 hamstring strain, dealing with a soft tissue injury. He’s progressed throughout the week. A Willis, Texas, native, playing against the Longhorns is important to the former Five-Star Plus quarterback.

If Lagway can’t go on Saturday, third-string quarterback Aidan Warner will get the start. He was 7 of 22 against Georgia last week, throwing for 66 yards and an interception.
