There weren’t a lot of positives for Florida in Saturday’s blowout loss to Miami, but the play of running back Montrell Johnson was a bright spot.

The senior had 11 carries for 106 yards, including a 71-yard touchdown, in the 41-17 loss.

Florida legend Steve Spurrier joined Pat Dooley on Another Dooley Noted Podcast on Monday and shared that he believes Montrell Johnson needs more touches moving forward.

“I wish the guy up top would’ve said, ‘Coach, remember that play that went for 71 yards? Just try it one more time, please,’” Spurrier joked. “But yea, that was our offensive highlight, no question. And man, I think we’ve gotta give it to Montrell 25 times a game, if we can.”

Florida trailed Miami 24-10 at the half, and the Gators were playing catch up just about the entire game. Florida ran only 54 plays in the loss — 26 passing and 28 rushing. However, of the 28 rushing attempts, 10 were either quarterback runs or sacks by Graham Mertz and DJ Lagway.

Spurrier wants to see more designed runs for Montrell Johnson moving forward following his monster game.

The Louisiana native, who started his career with Billy Napier at Louisiana, rushed for 817 yards and five touchdowns last season for the Gators, while averaging 5.4 yards per carry.

Steve Spurrier: Florida, Billy Napier ‘can’t just keep on doing whatever we’re doing’

In addition to Montrell Johnson getting more carries, Steve Spurrier believes more changes need to come for the Gators.

Spurrier joined Pat Dooley on Another Dooley Noted Podcast on Monday and was asked for his reaction to Saturday’s game. His message to Gators head coach Billy Napier — it’s time to start doing things differently.

“Obviously I am the UF ambassador, so I can’t be critical. You can, I can’t. Or I shouldn’t be,” Steve Spurrier said. “But obviously it was very disappointing watching the way the whole team performed. I mean all the way down the ladder.

“The only suggestion that I’m going to have is that Billy Napier and his guys, they need to do some things differently. And they can choose how to do it differently, but we can’t just keep on doing whatever we’re doing, during the week, pregames, blah, blah, blah. Just everything, all the way down the line.”
