Florida State campus shooting: Seminoles cancel multiple home events after tragic event

Florida State has canceled all athletics events on campus through Sunday, April 20, following an active school shooting situation that unfolded around noon on Thursday. There were multiple events impacted.
A baseball series opener against Virginia was set to be played at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday. That game will be canceled, along with the other two games in the series. The other event impacted was a home softball series against Georgia Tech.
Other sports are being played away from campus this weekend. The men’s tennis team, women’s golf team and the men’s and women’s track and field teams are all in action away from home over the next few days.
Florida State issued an active shooter alert for the Tallahassee campus after reports surfaced at FSU’s Student Union, according to emergency alerts issued just after noon ET. Campus police were responding to the scene.
CNN is reporting that a “suspect” is in custody and the shooting has stopped. However, campus officials are still asking everyone on campus to “continue to shelter in place until law enforcement contacts you,” per NBC News.
“At this time, details are still unfolding, and we do not yet have specific information to share,” the Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare representative told NBC News. “However, we want to assure the community that our teams are fully mobilized and prepared to provide the highest level of care and support to all those affected.”

There were allegedly more than 30 shots fired at the Florida State Student Union. Local media sources suggest there are multiple casualties, according to Crown Intelligence Group’s X/Twitter account. That has yet to be confirmed by local law enforcement.
A video posted to X/Twitter by FSU meteorology student Garrett Harvey showed people running away form the Student Union across Tennessee Street. Multiple videos surfaced online showing a heavy police presence.
Florida State has canceled all classes for the rest of the day Thursday and asks students to avoid campus, according to NBC News. The school also advised on further steps students could take.
“Individuals not already on the main campus at this time should avoid coming to the Tallahassee main campus,” the school said on its advisory website. The university activated its emergency notification system, instructing students and staff to lock all doors, stay away from windows and await further instructions. The situation remains active and ongoing.
