Florida State basketball defeated in-state rival Miami for the eighth consecutive time on Tuesday night after a controversial foul call with less than one second on the clock. After a pair of free throws, the Seminoles took a 65-64 lead before a Miami heave fell short at the buzzer.

On the foul call, Florida State forward RayQuan Evans drove to the basket and turned toward the rim before being met by Miami guard Charlie Moore. As Moore went to block Evans, he appeared to lean into the shooter and make contact with his body, but some felt the contact was minimal.

“Evans pushed it up the court, Charlie played defense, the ref called the foul, there’s nothing we can do,” said Miami head coach Jim Larranaga after the game, via Cal Friedman of TMH Sports.

To make the game-winning free throws more special, RayQuan Evans stood at the free throw line as the first Native American basketball player in Florida State history. He made the pair of shots in the team’s special teal jerseys which honor the school’s Native American connections.

More on Florida State and Miami

With the Miami loss, every ACC team now holds at least one conference loss in its first six games. The Hurricanes recently knocked off the conference’s highest ranked team Duke on the road, leaving them as the only ACC team at 5-0 entering the night. Florida State’s down year hopes to take a turn off the win which brings them to 9-5 and 3-2 in conference play.

The Miami Hurricanes were excluded from the AP Poll to the dismay of many this week despite their big road win over Duke. Their 13-4 record puts them in the conversation for an NCAA Tournament berth and contention within the ACC.
