Boo Corrigan addresses committee's 'appetite' to move one-loss team ahead of undefeated team within the Power 5
Once Jordan Travis went down with his season-ending leg injury, Florida State‘s College Football Playoff chances were questioned. Even if the Seminoles found a way to go undefeated, could they be left out of the top four? Maybe in place of a one-loss conference champion like Alabama, Texas, or Oregon?
CFP selection committee chair Boo Corrigan says there has been more discussion within the group about the subject. Florida State has been great all season but the play of Travis has been a big reason why. Not having him under center, there is an argument to be made the Seminoles are not a top-four team, no matter their record.
“I can tell you the discussions have become more and more active, animated, intense,” Corrigan said. “Whatever word you want to use. We look at it all day Monday and then we’ll look at it again Monday night, then come back on Tuesday and go through it again and look at everything. While we do group, to your point earlier, the first three and then the next three, it doesn’t mean we don’t look at 3 and 4.
“Doesn’t mean we don’t look at 4 and 5, 6 and 7, kind of on down the line to make sure. Our goal at the end of it every week is to make sure that we believe as we go on with you that we’ve got it right.”

Now, this would be far from a done deal. As FOX’s Joel Klatt recently said, this scenario has occurred in the CFP era. Back in 2014 when JT Barrett went down for Ohio State, Cardale Jones had to step in for the Big Ten Championship game. Dominating Wisconsin in Indianapolis gave the committee enough to put the Buckeyes in.
Florida State and Tate Rodemaker have the chance to do something similar. Take care of business against a 5-6 Florida team before beating No. 10 Louisville in the ACC Championship. Do that and Mike Norvell is traveling to the Sugar Bowl or Rose Bowl.
If not…
“I do think there is a scenario where they remain undefeated and don’t go to the playoff,” Klatt said during Monday’s episode of Andy Staples On3. “If they have to squeak by Florida — who is not a very good football team… You can’t go and struggle against Florida. I don’t care if it’s a rivalry game or on the road. You’ve to prove to the committee that you can be a dominate, great team at the top of college football. Even without your quarterback.”
