Florida State surging for another 4-star QB after losing commitment from Tramell Jones
Florida State’s 2025 recruiting class took another big hit on Thursday morning as Jacksonville Mandarin four-star quarterback Tramell Jones announced his decommitment.
The senior gunslinger had been pledged to the Seminoles since April of 2023, but is now back on the board amidst FSU’s poor 2024 season, coupled with a torrid push from Florida — which is now trending to land the 6-foot-1, 200-pounder.
With the Early Signing Period just three weeks out, Florida State has just 12 commits in its 2025 class. That list no longer includes a blue-chip QB, though that could change again soon.
At the end of October, Fort Myers (Fla.) Bishop Verot four-star QB Carter Smith backed off a commitment to Michigan. Now the top uncommitted signal-caller in the 2025 class, Smith is once again weighing his options, including the in-state Seminoles.
On Thursday, On3 VP of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong logged a pick in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine in favor of FSU landing Smith, the No. 200 overall prospect and No. 18 QB in the 2025 cycle. Earlier this week, Smith’s father, Dan, told Wiltfong that Carter is looking at an official visit to Tallahassee on the weekend of Nov. 30.

“I like the way this one is shaping up for Florida State. The Seminoles have always been one of Smith’s top schools and talks have heated up over the last couple weeks,” Wiltfong wrote on Nov. 11.
Smith is set to take an official visit to Wisconsin this weekend, though FSU is the program picking up steam for the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year in Florida. As a senior in eight games Smith has completed 60 percent of his passes for 1,299 yards and 12 touchdowns. He’s added another 480 yards rushing and 11 scores.
His decision to decommit from Michigan came amidst the Wolverines’ public pursuit of Belleville (Mich.) Five-Star Plus+ QB and LSU commit Bryce Underwood, the nation’s No. 1 recruit. FSU, led by Norvell and QBs coach Tony Torkaz, are now looking to fill a big gap in the 2025 class with Smith’s pledge.
“Coach Tokarz, we have been communicating on what feels like forever now,” Smith told Warchant on Wednesday. “I would say he’s very down to earth, and I can talk with him about anything. I think it’s at that point in our relationship. We can talk about whatever.”
