Florida State transfer forward Malique Ewin is down to five schools, he tells On3’s Joe Tipton. Ewin will be focusing on Arkansas, Auburn, Kansas, Mississippi State, and Virginia moving forward. A nice group of power conference foes, three of which are from the SEC, fighting for Ewin’s services.

This is the second time Ewin has been through the NCAA transfer portal process. Coming out of high school, the forward signed with Ole Miss. But after a year in Oxford, he left to play the 2022-2023 season at the JUCO level South Plains College in Texas.

When he was ready to make a jump back up to the Division I level, Ewin became one of the top players available. Florida State won the recruitment, hoping a role could be carved out under head coach Leonard Hamilton. Alabama, Florida, Virginia Tech, and Xavier were involved too and weirdly enough, none are in the mix this go-round.

Ewin played and started in all 30 games this past season, averaging 14.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game while shooting nearly 60% from the field. It’s easy to see why other schools are interested based on those numbers. Whoever winds up landing his commitment will be hoping for a similar impact during the 2025-2026 season.

According to the On3 Industry Transfer Portal Rankings, he ranks as the No. 52 overall player to enter this cycle. Ewin comes in at No. 12 when looking at just the power forward position.

There was an injury Ewin suffered late in the Florida State season. Hamilton claims Ewin tried to play through the pain during a February matchup against the North Carolina Tar Heels. Thankfully for Ewin, nothing serious emerged from the situation.

“He didn’t turn his ankle. I can’t give you a real assessment. Some soreness in his foot, so I’m sure they’ll have an MRI and I’ll know more tomorrow,” Hamilton said. “He tried to go back in. He thought he could play but obviously, when he started running up and down the court and he felt some pain. We didn’t need to have him out there playing in pain. But he came out there, which I thought was good.”
