Conference play is underway around the country and in the SEC the Florida Gators are looking to bounce back after opening conference play with a loss last week. Meanwhile, the Mississippi State Bulldogs are looking to start conference play off on the right foot.

Undeniably, it’s been a slow start for both of these programs in 2024. With that, there’s been some tension around this game and concern about the direction the rest of the season will go from here.

Both programs are entering the game with 1-2 records and in each of their cases, their only win came against an FCS opponent. Florida also already has a loss in SEC play, dropping a game last week to Texas A&M.

There are rising tensions around the Florida program amid the on-field struggles. Head coach Billy Napier has found himself on the hot seat and now he has to keep his team focused on performing this season. On top of that, Napier is also juggling a quarterback situation where he’s having veteran quarterback Graham Mertz and freshman quarterback DJ Lagway share snaps.

“I would say that we’re committed to playing both players,” Billy Napier said of the quarterback situation. “The impressive thing to me is just how both these guys have handled themselves, how they’re working together, the camaraderie that they have that piece is impressive to me. That can be divisive if you’ve got the wrong people in the building. So, just the way they handled themselves last week.”

As for Mississippi State, the Bulldogs are in their first season under head coach Jeff Lebby. A long-time offensive coordinator, this is his first head coaching job and he’s currently trying to rebuild the program in his own image. However, to this point, it’s been a struggle and the Bulldogs are coming off an upset loss to Toledo.

Amid that frustrating start to his tenure in Starkville, Lebby shared a message for the Mississippi State fans.

“There’s great disappointment in how we played, how I coached, how we did what we did on Saturday morning,” Lebby said. “For us, you know, our brand and what we do on Saturdays? Man, it affects our entire state. It affects our fanbase, our university, and the energy that’s pumped into our community. We understand that. We do.”

Florida and Mississippi State will kickoff at 12:00 p.m. EST on Saturday, September 21st in Starkville, Mississippi.
