Mississippi State Head Coach Jeff Lebby Previews Florida Matchup

Former Alabama safety Tony Mitchell will transfer to play for Mississippi State, he announced Wednesday evening via X. Mitchell is currently on the roster at East Mississippi Community College.

Mitchell was a four-star prospect coming out of Thompson (AL) High School in 2023. He ranked as the No. 116 overall player and No. 10 safety in the class according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Mitchell contributed primarily on special teams during his true freshman season with the Crimson Tide. He appeared in seven games and recorded one tackle in a contest against Middle Tennessee.

Prior to his first college season, Mitchell was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intention to sell/distribute. He received a sentence of a three-year probation and 100 hours of community service along with a suspension from the team.

Tony Mitchell announced he would enter the transfer portal in April and eventually signed with East Mississippi CC. He has been playing the nickel position for the team and recorded eight tackles and one fumble recovery.

The 6-foot-2 defensive back is the 18th commitment for Mississippi State in the 2025 class. The Bulldogs are off to a 1-2 start this season under first-year coach Jeff Lebby.

Mitchell committed to Mississippi State over offers from Ole Miss and West Virginia. He told Maroon and White Daily that defensive coordinator Coleman Hutzler, who previously was his special teams coach at Alabama, is a big reason why.

“It’s a good connection and relationship with coach Hutzler,” he said. “So that was always a factor for me and having that connection there was huge. He really doesn’t have to say much to me when it comes to recruiting and all of that because he coached me at Alabama last year. So we are already familiar with each other and he knows what I can do on the field. So he expects me to come in and be a great player.”
