Former Cal, Kentucky, Texas guard Devin Askew commits to Long Beach State

Former Cal guard Devin Askew has committed to Long Beach State as a transfer, according to On3’s Joe Tipton. Askew began his career at Kentucky and also spent a season playing at Texas.

Askew just finished his senior season with the Golden Bears in his second in Berkeley. He started his career in Lexington where he spent his freshman year at Kentucky before transferring to Austin and playing his sophomore year at Texas.

In 78 appearances with the three teams, Askew has averaged 6.1 points, 2.2 assists, and 2.1 rebounds in 24 minutes per game. He has shot 36.5% from the field and 28.1% from three in his career.

Of his four collegiate seasons, his junior year, Askew’s first with Cal, was on pace to be his best. He averaged career-highs in points (15.5) and assists (three) as the team’s leading scorer had he played enough games.

However, his pair of seasons with California both ended early. A sports hernia surgery finished his last year and a foot injury closed this year for him.

Askew played high school basketball at Mater Dei in California where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 30 overall recruit in the 2020 cycle. That was according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He finished as the No. 6 CG in the class and the No. 6 player out of the state.

Askew came to UK where he was part of the No. 1 class for the Wildcats per On3’s 2020 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. He was the third highest-rated recruit in that group for John Calipari behind only Brandon Boston (No. 6) and Terrence Clarke (No. 8).

Report: Cal to extend coach Mark Madsen’s contract by two years

California has agreed to extend Mark Madsen‘s contract for an additional two years according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Jeff Borzello.

Madsen’s deal will now run through the 2029-30 season.

Madsen has helped lead a pretty remarkable turnaround for the Golden Bears. Prior to his arrival, California went just 2-18 in Pac-12 play during the 2022-23 season. In his first year, Madsen coached California to a 9-11 mark in the conference.

Madsen was widely considered one of the top up-and-coming coaches in the profession prior to his hire by the Golden Bears.

The 48-year-old head coach is in his first season with the Bears after taking over following a four-year stint at Utah Valley from 2019-23. He helped lead Utah Valley to the semifinals of the 2023 NIT. During that campaign he was named the 2023 Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Utah Valley won two conference titles under his watch.
