Former Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Ellis is the new head football coach at SAGU, Southwestern Assemblies of God University, a small private university in Waxahachie, Texas. The program announced the North Carolina alum as its eighth head football coach at the end of June.

“During this process, it became evident that the job of Head Football Coach at SAGU has become a desirable position,” SAGU Director of Athletics Dr. Jesse Godding wrote in the team’s release. “There were a tremendous number of highly qualified candidates. Coach Ellis separated himself as capable of leading the football program forward in pursuing athletic excellence, spiritual formation, and preparing servant-leaders.”

SAGU went 9-3 last season in the National Christian College Athletics Association. They capped the season with a win in the Victory Bowl versus Sterling College.

Ellis takes the helm of the SAGU program after two years at Texas College. The Steers’ 2020 season was canceled due to COVID-19 but last season, Texas College went 0-11. One of their losses came in a 63-0 shutout at the hands of SAGU.

SAGU shared that Ellis’s coaching style is modeled after three of his former coaches: Mack Brown, Mike Zimmer, and Bill Parcells.

A Wendell, North Carolina native, Greg Ellis attended UNC where he developed into a starter at defensive end. He went on to be the Dallas Cowboys’ first-round draft pick in 1998 at No. 8 overall.

In his career in Dallas, he started 155 of 162 games for the Cowboys over 11 seasons. After an Achilles injury sidelined him in 2006, Ellis returned in 2007, earning NFL Comeback Player of the Year. He also received his first and only Pro Bowl nod in 2007.

Over his 11 seasons with the Cowboys, he notched 377 tackles, 77 sacks, 20 forced fumbles, and nine fumble recoveries. He also had four interceptions and two touchdowns off returns. After getting the axe due to salary cap limitations, Ellis played one season for the Oakland Raiders before retiring. He posted seven sacks in 14 games for the Raiders.
