Former Florida safety Greg Smith III is set to visit Miami on Thursday, he revealed on Wednesday. Smith entered the transfer portal on April 22.

Smith spent one season in Gainesville, totaling three solo tackles and a pass breakup during five games played. His most production came during the rivalry matchup against Florida State, where he logged three tackles during the 31-11 victory.

He played through the entire spring slate for the Gators and was even spending time with the starting unit as expected starter Bryce Thornton has been limited to this point. Thornton spoke highly of his defensive back cohort before the knowledge of his transfer.

“I’ve actually seen a lot of growth from Greg, especially not playing as much in his freshman year as he probably wanted to. But this year, he’s taken a step,” Thornton said. “He’s out there making calls for everybody. So I’m really proud of him for what he’s done and showed the maturity to be a better player.”

Before stepping foot on campus, Smith was a four-star recruit according to the On3 Industry Rankings, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services. Smith ranked as the No. 261 overall player, as well as the No. 18 defensive back in his cycle. He was also the 31st-ranked player from the state of Florida.

If the Riverview native does choose to commit to Miami, he’ll be joining a program coming off its first 10-win season since 2015. Mario Cristobal is set to lead the Hurricanes into his fourth season as head coach, and has steadily increased Miami’s win total in each year he’s been on campus. If that trend continues in 2025, the College Football Playoff is almost certain.

Smith has posted some of his practice highlights on his social media. However, Miami is going to have some competition for his services as he also revealed that Memphis met with him for an in-home visit on Wednesday.
