Billy Napier on Florida Gators facing criticism

It’s been a tough time in Gainesville following Florida‘s disappointing 41-17 loss at home to Miami this past weekend to open up the college football season for the Gators. Now facing a schedule that does not get much easier this season and question marks regarding the future of their head coach Billy Napier.

There’s been no shortage of dialogue and opinions surrounding the Florida program, including from former players and coaches like former longtime Gators head coach Steve Spurrier. Who led the program for 12 seasons and recently joined Pat Dooley’s Another Dooley Noted Podcast to share his thoughts on Florida and their current coaching staff.

“We need one of our coaches get mad,” Spurrier said. “I don’t know if any of them are capable, but I’d love to see one of them on the sideline throw his sheet down, or his headset, or do something. Somebody, somebody get mad.”

Spurrier’s comments follow LSU head coach Brian Kelly showing his frustration following his team’s Week 1 loss to USC on Sunday night. Slamming his fist on the table during the postgame press conference following a third straight loss to open the season.

Some head coaches have fiery personalities while others are more cool, calm, and collected like Napier. But Spurrier stressed the importance of having a combination of both on a coaching staff, citing one of the best college football coaches of all time.

“Coach [Tom] Osborne in Nebraska, one of the great coaches of all time. Back in the 90s, they actually won more games than anybody in America in the 90s … And he was always very calm, but he had some fireball assistants I learned later,” Spurrier explained.

“Their defensive coordinator, those guys that clobbered us in that ’95 game, their defensive coach got them fired up on the sideline every game. He was a fireball and offense had one or two guys also. So if the head coach is not a fireball, you got to have somebody on that staff.”

Maybe some intense coaches on Florida’s sidelines could jolt Florida back on track this season. But there’s no question that Gator fans want to see some big wins this season in year three under Napier above anything else.
