College football fans have had Week 5 of the season circled for a reason. It’s a weekend where the two most successful programs in the SEC and across college football square off in an epic matchup when Georgia takes a visit to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama.

The Crimson Tide or the Bulldogs have represented all but one of the last 10 SEC Champions, a title that former Florida and South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier is familiar with winning during his coaching days. Spurrier recently predicted who he thinks will win Saturday’s epic showdown on Another Dooley Noted Podcast with Pat Dooley.

“Since it’s at Bama, I would take Alabama,” Spurrier said.

“Didn’t I read Kirby [Smart] is 1-6 against Alabama or something like that? So they have been the two best, Georgia and Bama, the last several years,” Spurrier added. “So it’ll be a huge game.”

Despite Georgia’s head coach winning two of the last three national championships, the Crimson Tide have served as his kryptonite, especially with former head coach Nick Saban at the helm. Kirby Smart is just 1-5 against Alabama since leaving Tuscaloosa and taking over his alma mater ahead of the 2016 season.

Smart’s lone win over Alabama did come in the 2021 National Championship game, and his record against the Crimson Tide is exclusively against Saban. Who retired this offseason following an unprecedented 17-year run in Tuscaloosa.

But Spurrier still believes that the recent play of Alabama paired with them hosting Saturday’s game at Bryant-Denny Stadium favors the Crimson Tide and new head coach Kalen DeBoer enough to get the win.

“The way they both played recently, you’d have to go with Alabama, it is at Alabama. But then again, Georgia, they were picked number one. It should be a heck of a game,” Spurrier said.

Georgia dropped from No. 1 in the AP Poll to No. 2 following their narrow 13-12 win over Kentucky in Week 3. It was a week where the Crimson Tide celebrated a dominant 42-10 win on the road at Wisconsin as both teams now come off of a bye week.

Both Georgia and Alabama will be rested and supremely focused on what should be a physical, high-stakes game this Saturday. A marquee matchup that kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET, airing on ABC and streaming on Fubo.
