Gethro Muscadin, who played at Kansas before transferring to New Mexico, passed away this week, the Lobos announced. He was 22.

Muscadin was involved in a serious car accident in December 2021 and was in a coma for 10 months following the crash. He played for Kansas in 2020-21 before transferring to New Mexico prior to last season. He had just left the program at the time of the accident.

“We spoke after SMU, and I think we both agreed it wasn’t the right fit for him,” Pitino said, via KRQE-TV. “We wish him nothing but the best. Hopefully we can help him find a spot that is the right fit for him, and we’ll help him with whatever we can moving forward.”

Muscadin entered the transfer portal just before the accident, according to multiple reports. After the accident, both of his former coaches — Pitino and Bill Self — sent out tweets of support.

“Last night Gethro Muscadin and a friend were involved in a [serious] one car accident,” Self tweeted Thursday. “He, his friend, and their families need a miracle. Please lift them up as Gethro fights for his life.”

“Please pray for Gethro Muscadin,” Pitino tweeted. “He’s fighting for his life after a horrible car accident last night. Every prayer matters right now. So tragic and devastating.”
