Miami transfer defensive back Demetrius Freeney commits to Arizona
Former Miami cornerback Demetrius Freeney has committed to Arizona, On3 has learned.
Freeney entered the transfer portal this offseason following just one season with the Hurricanes. Spending the first season of his college career at San Mateo College before joining Miami ahead of the 2023 season.
At San Mateo Freeney played in seven games where recorded 10 tackles, two interceptions, six pass break ups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. And last season at Miami he contributed primarily on special teams, appearing in three games. Seeing action against NC State, Florida State, and Boston College in his lone season in Coral Gables.
Freeney played high school football at San Leandro High School in California, where he was an unrated and unranked prospect in the 2022 according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. As the 6-foot tall, 190-pound defensive back becomes the 15th player to commit to the Wildcats this offseason through the transfer portal and the fourth in the secondary.

“It starts like right now,” Cristobal said. “This is a whole different phase now. The first part is making sure our people thank all the people that made this [Spring Game] happen. That’s number one.”
For Cristobal and Miami, the key step was to asses what the team needs and the best way to address those needs.
“Then right to what we’ve been doing,” Cristobal said earlier this month. “We’ve been assessing. What’re the areas that clearly need help? What are the ones that we’ve clearly improved at? What can we do well, what maybe we should get away from and not do?”
In the Winter Transfer Portal window, Miami had 20 players transfer out and 10 players transfer into the program. That left the Hurricanes with the 24th-ranked transfer portal class of the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings. Among the biggest names that Miami added was quarterback Cam Ward.
