Connor Stalions on Michigan's struggles: 'They're just caught in transition right now'

Michigan looked like a completely different team from the one that won last year’s national title on Saturday against Texas. The Wolverines were outgained by more than 100 yards and turned the ball over three times in a 31-12 loss.

Former staff member Connor Stalions, who was at the center of the Michigan sign-stealing scandal, believes he knows what’s wrong with the Wolverines.

According to Stalions, it has nothing to do with first-year head coach Sherrone Moore not being the right fit. Instead, Stalions believes Michigan is in transition right now after losing so many players and staff members from a year ago.

Connor Stalions analyzed Michigan’s current situation from a Wolverines fan’s perspective and not from someone who used to be on staff when speaking with CBS Sports.

“Look at Michigan; you could easily blame this on Sherrone,” Connor Stalions told CBS Sports. “Well, let’s be real. Losing J.J. McCarthy, Blake Corum and 11 other draft picks to the NFL makes a difference.

“My opinion of it from a fan perspective is the way that this team responds in the next couple of weeks will show that the culture remains. They’re just caught in transition right now.”

Michigan’s next three games are against Arkansas State, USC and Minnesota, and Stalions expects the Wolverines to get back on track during those matchups.

Connor Stalions reveals he gets a lot of support about eventually returning to Michigan as a coach

While Connor Stalions is not currently on staff at Michigan, he is hoping to be down the line.

“I hope,” Stalions said, via CBS Sports. “I get a lot of support from various people about eventually bringing me back [to Michigan].”

Stalions can’t return to Michigan immediately though, according to CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd’s breakdown.

“At the end of the documentary ‘Sign Stealer,’ a three- to five-year show-cause penalty for Stalions is mentioned but not substantiated,” he wrote. “And the NCAA certainly isn’t commenting further in one of the most compelling enforcement cases in the history of the organization.”

Not only that, don’t expect a resolution until perhaps the spring.

“Two sources familiar with the details of the current NCAA investigation told CBS Sports not to expect a verdict from the NCAA on the sign-stealing investigation until perhaps next spring,” Dodd wrote. “Former Michigan assistants Jesse Minter and Denard Robinson are reportedly expected to cooperate with the NCAA before then in a negotiated resolution. Minter is the defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers. Robinson’s time with Michigan ended in the spring; he was arrested for allegedly operation a vehicle while intoxicated in April.

“At this point, Stalions and his team of lawyers seem poised to go through the full enforcement process.”
