According to On3’s Pete Nakos, former Washington forward Dominique Diomande has signed with BYU out of the NCAA transfer portal. Diomande had been on the open market for just two days but is still staying out West. A nice win for head coach Kevin Young not too long after BYU’s 2024-2025 season ended.

Diomande join the Washington program in January as a walk-on. At the time, it was a surprise boost for the Huskies. However, he never ended up seeing the court before deciding to move on from the program and look for a new team. Prior to that decision to redshirt, Washington head coach Danny Sprinkle debated whether or not to play him.

“I know everybody wants to see him and all that, but I got to be fair to him and fair to the team, too,” Sprinkle said. “And at the end of the day, he’s got to earn it. I don’t care who it is. I don’t care if LeBron James is here, you got to come and earn it, then you’re going to play.”

There is still thought to be some NBA potential out there for Diomande. Over 26 games in the France-ProA U21 league, he averaged 16.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. Washington was hoping he could make an impact this year but as mentioned, wound up not playing the youngster.

BYU now gets its opportunity with what should be a loaded roster in Provo. No name is bigger than No. 1 overall recruit AJ Dybantsa, one of the more hyped prospects in recent history. Young was able to bring him into the program and expectations are going to be high.

Adding somebody like Diomande only adds to them. Fresh off a Sweet Sixteen appearance, BYU fans will be dreaming of something even better in 2026.

More on the offseason for Washington after losing Dominique Doimande

The 2024-25 season was a year of transition for Washington. As a result, it was also a frustrating one on the court. The Huskies made the move to the Big Ten and brought in Danny Sprinkle to be the team’s new head coach. Despite Sprinkle leading Montana State in his final two seasons there and Utah State in his only season there to the NCAA Tournament, the Huskies struggled going 13-18 overall and 4-16 in Big Ten play. That was last place in the conference regular season standings.

This offseason will now be one of major turnover for Washington and Sprinkle. Diomande is now a fourth Washington Husky in the portal, joining Jase ButlerChristian King, and KC Ibekwe. Between those outgoing transfers and graduating players, Washington now only has two players committed to returning next season. That would be freshman guard Vazoumana Diallo and fifth-year center Franck Kepnang.
