Former Wyoming DT Gavin Meyer schedules visits with USC, Cal

Former Wyoming defensive tackle Gavin Meyer scheduled visits with USC and Cal, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.

Other schools in his top four include Wisconsin and Illinois. He’s set to visit USC and Cal next week, per Nakos.

Meyer appeared in 26 games over the last two years but put up his best numbers in 2022. That’s when he had 40 tackles, including five tackles for loss, to go with four sacks and a forced fumble. In 2023, Meyer totaled 26 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss as a senior.

As a member of the Class of 2020, Meyer was a three-star recruit out of Franklin (Wisc.) High, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 14 overall prospect in the state, the No. 168 EDGE in the class and the No. 1,899 overall prospect in the class.

Gavin Meyer to visit USC, Cal next week

Meyer could be one of the positives in the spring portal for USC head coach Lincoln Riley. Last month, the Trojans head coach weighed the positives and negatives regarding the transfer window.

“I don’t know that we’ve had it long enough for me to say,” Riley said. “I mean, what you don’t love is you go through Spring ball and invest in some of these reps in people and then they don’t play for you in the Fall. I don’t love that piece of it, although that’s not going to be a huge part of your roster. There’s always going to be a couple outliers.”

The bigger thing for Riley has became having a team that loves playing for the school. When the core is like that, then the team should stay relatively intact.

“We got a lot of dudes on this team right now that love SC, that love this team, that are as completely committed as they possibly could be and we’re not going to let the actions of a few sour us or deject us in any way. It’s part of it. If we lose a couple of guys then we’ll replace them. But the large amount of this team feels that way,” Riley said.

“So, I don’t know my personal feelings. Probably like anything, there’s some positives and negatives to both but it’s something that it’s part of the rules right now. It’s just something that we’ve got to deal with.”
