Folks in Lubbock were not too happy with a call made against Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Texas Tech was called for roughing the passer, giving the Buffaloes 15 yards and an automatic first down. Arguably the most controversial penalty in college football, this one has brought some debate.

After getting a replay of the hit, FOX rules analyst Dean Blandino was in agreement with the Jones AT&T Stadium crowd. Sanders did appear to get hit low but after another look was enough to convince Blandino that the call was an incorrect one.

“You want to protect the passer in that defenseless posture,” Blandino said while watching replays. “And again, really tough to tell — if it’s above this knee. That’s high. I don’t like that call.”

Play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti even wondered what the Texas Tech defender was supposed to do. Color commentator Brock Huard was not too sure either, not being able to provide much of an answer. You can watch the full play and Blandino’s reaction here.

Most times, these scenarios are heightened because of the specific score/situation. Colorado went on to score a touchdown and take the lead in Lubbock, 17-13. Sanders himself ran the ball into the end zone on a seven-yard run. The penalty was thrown after a third down incompletion and more likely than not, the kicking unit was going to walk onto the field.

Thankfully, there is still a lot of game left to be played in Lubbock. Texas Tech is looking to extend its chances to make the Big 12 Championship game, while Colorado has been given its own life in the conference title race.

Quarterbacks will continue to be protected, no matter who is back there, but even Blandino could not agree with this specific flag thrown by the officials.
