Fran Brown sends message to future Syracuse opponents: 'When you play us, just be quiet'
Syracuse has started the season 2-0, including a win over ranked Georgia Tech on Saturday. And now the Orange and new head coach Fran Brown are feeling a bit bullish.
Specifically, Brown was upset that Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key had seemingly insulted Syracuse’s physicality. Speaking after Syracuse held on for a 31-28 win against the Yellowjackets, Brown didn’t emptied the clip.
“Because he said he wanted to fight from 12 to 4, so that’s all I was thinking about,” Brown said, “From 12 to 4, that’s why I was very — and you know me. So it’s a big difference. When you know who I am and you come at me about toughness, like don’t do that. This game was very personal. And that you know I coached with Kirby Smart and Will Muschamp, so why would we not be a tough, physical football team? That’s just what they do and that’s what I’ll be about and that’s where I was at. And I did take that very personal and I’m going to make sure everyone understands that, when you play us, just be quiet. That way, we’re just going to worry about us throughout the week. Don’t give no ammo to me. You give ammo to me, I’m coming.”
Key, specifically, said that he told his team the game would come down to who could be the most physical.
“I just told the team, this has nothing to do plays, calls, runs, passes, coverages, fronts, none of that,” Key said earlier in the week. “This game’s about our ability to go be the most physically tough football team we can possibly be from 12 til about four o’clock on Saturday. That’s it, hands down. That is the only thing.”

Brown also pointed to fourth down conversions and stops as evidence of his team playing with the physical edge — beside the final score.

The Orange went 2-for-2 on fourth downs, and came up with a key stop to force Georgia Tech to go 1-for-2 on fourth down attempts.
“Any time you get the ball on 4th down, when you’re going for it and you’re able to stop them, because when he’s going for it, he’s saying, ‘I’m tougher than you, I’m about to go for it,'” Brown said. “And then I’m saying, when we go for it, ‘We’re tougher than you.’ And, who won the most 4th downs, today?”
