Garrett Nussmeier injury update: Latest on LSU QB
LSU starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was injured on Saturday night, limping off the field at the end of the first half. At the beginning of the second half, he was back in the game. We got an update on his status from Alex Chappell, the sideline reporter from the broadcast.
“Talking with LSU’s sideline and they are telling me that Garrett Nussmeier took a tough shot, brought him at the end of the first half. But he was able to shake it off, stay warm during halftime and was ready to come right out and start things off again here in the second half,” Chappell said.
She also added, “They did not clarify if it was the lower body.”
He completed 14 of 19 passes for 165 yards and three touchdowns, before leaving the game in the first half against Nicholls State. Nussmeier was seen moving around on the sidelines before going to the locker room.
When he left the game, he was replaced by backup quarterback Rickie Collins. In the 2023 On3 Industry Rankings, Collins was rated as the No. 17 quarterback prospect in America and earned a four-star rating. As a junior for Woodlawn High School (Baton Rouge, La.), he was named District 5-5A Offensive MVP after throwing for nearly 2,000 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Nussmeier had gotten off to a hot start in the 2024 campaign, putting on a masterful display in the team’s season opening loss against the USC Trojans. He looked extremely accurate throughout the night.
The LSU quarterback connected on 29 of his 38 passes for 304 yards, while tossing in two touchdowns with one interception. The interception was right at the end of the game, when USC linebacker Mason Cobb picked him off to officially seal the victory for the Trojans.
Nussmeier also connected on a beautiful 19-yard touchdown strike to Kyren Lacy in the second quarter. The LSU quarterback dropped back and threw a perfectly placed ball from the right hash of the 28-yard line. The ball found the outstretched hands of Lacy in midair in the left side of the end zone.

In 2023 as Jayden Daniels’ backup, Nussmeier threw for four touchdowns on 591 passing yards and one pick. Most impressively, Nussmeier was not sacked in 78 passing attempts last season, which of course includes his 45 passes in the bowl game.
He entered the 2024 campaign coming off one of the best games of his career in his team’s bowl game.
He was able to start in the Tigers’ bowl game due to Daniels’ choice to opt out of the ReliaQuest Bowl vs. Wisconsin.
In the end, Nussmeier completed 31 of his 45 passes for 395 yards and three touchdowns while only throwing one interception. The Tigers trailed Wisconsin by two scores early in the matchup, but behind Nussmeier’s lead, LSU overcame the deficit and outscored the Badgers 35-17 — which was capped by a 98-yard game-winning drive. It was LSU’s 10th win of the season, who ended its season with a 35-31 victory.
