Garrett Sundra made his debut at No. 131 in the most recent 2024 On3 150 update. The 6-foot-11 stretch-four man experienced a breakout season this year for nationally ranked Fairfax (VA) Paul VI.

“I would say I’m a hard-nosed player,” Sundra told On3. “I bring energy, positive energy to the game. I’d say I’m a good leader and can shoot the ball well from the outside. I’m comfortable in the mid-post and play hard on the boards. I would say I am a stretch 4 that runs the floor well and is just a great hustle guy overall. I like Luka (Doncic) because he plays at a great pace. KD (Kevin Durant) is a tall guy who can dribble better, so I try to take some moves from him.”

On3 caught up with Garrett Sundra after a recent live viewing to break down his recruitment and talk visits.

Sundra talks Butler

“I’ve taken one official visit to Butler in October,” Sundra said.

“They were my first high major offer, and the coaches were serious about getting me out there. We got the chance to watch an exhibition game which was great to see. I loved Hinkle Fieldhouse and the coaches. They’re all great, every single one of them. Hinkle Fieldhouse is amazing, it is super cool, and it’s where they played in the movie Hoosiers. It was just great overall.

I talk the most with Coach (Mike) Pegues and Coach (Thad) Matta. It was great to be able to get to know Coach on my official. We got to eat dinner with him and his family.

Butler uses their four a lot; being a four, I think I would fit in well. They let them shoot the three, take their man off the dribble, and feed it to the five. There were a ton of fans who came out to support the bulldogs for just an exhibition game, so that was awesome to see.”

Sundra talks recruitment

“I don’t have anything scheduled yet for the spring or summer,” Sundra said. “I’m trying to get to Penn State and Virginia Tech on visits. We are working through the specifics.”

Penn State: “They’ve been having a really good season so far; they’re playing really well. They shoot the ball well as a team and emphasize that. They also have a guy from the DMV, which is cool.

“I love Coach (Micah) Shrewsbury, he came to watch the Sidwell game, so it was good to see him in person.”

Virginia Tech: “Coach Mike Jones, the Associate Head Coach there, used to coach at DeMatha, so we have that connection. I went to go watch the Virginia Tech versus Syracuse game which was great. Coach (Mike) Young dissected the Syracuse zone perfectly, which was great to see. They shot a bunch of threes in that one, I really like the way they play.

“The atmosphere was amazing. They played Enter Sandman which was awesome to experience, it got all the fans going.”

“I’m hearing a good bit from Miami, too,” Sundra said. “That’s pretty cool because they’re having a good season.”

Miami: “They have a lot of good guard play with some talented bigs. They’ve been winning a lot this year and have been ranked for most of the season. I really like Coach L (Jim Larranaga); he. hits me up pretty often. He and Coach (Bill) Courtney are the two main people I talk to at Miami.

In his words

“I don’t have a set time frame yet,” Sundra said. “But I’m going to try and get some visits done in the Spring, maybe some in the summer. No specific time; just get some in before next school year.

“The things you can’t really change in a school is the location and the coaching staff. A lot of the schools I’ve been talking to have a great coaching staff which is great. The way they play will be big for me, how they use their fours.

“I want to be able to have some freedom on offense, use my versatility. Nothing special, be able to catch it in the mid-post and make a read and make a play. Play some pick and pops and some ghosts here and there.
