On last Saturday’s edition of College GameDay, Gene Wojciechowski ran a story elaborating on Nick Saban hiring maligned coaches with experience leading programs, giving them a reprieve before their second chance as a head coach.

Among the coaches featured included Lane Kiffin, Mike Locksley, Steve Sarkisian and Butch Jones. Particularly, a story regarding Locksley going from leading his own program to taking children to hangout by the pool made rounds, proving how humbling of an experience it could be.

Afterwards, Wojciechowski joined the College GameDay Podcast to share another hilarious tidbit about the story, one when Kiffin trolled Locksley during his aforementioned hilarious low point.

“We probably did five hours of shooting, and four minutes makes it. Out of that, probably three minutes is actual sound from the coaches. So think about that for a moment. But one of the things that we weren’t able to put into the piece was at the time, Locksley had basically crashed at Lane Kiffin’s apartment, at this building,” began Wojciechowski. “You know the layout of ‘Bama much better than I do, having gone there. But he mentioned an apartment building that overlooks the football facility. I don’t know where that is exactly, you probably would. Anyway, it was whatever floor it was, it was the tenth floor of this apartment building, or seventh floor, and Locksley was just basically, grabbed the couch and was just going to stay with Kiffin so he could save some money. He calls Kiffin as he’s walking the kids over to the pool, and he’s like, ‘Lane, this is the absolute rock bottom for me.’ And Kiffin goes, ‘Yeah, I know, I’m watching you. I’m watching you from the apartment.’ He’s laughing at Locksley. He’s taking video of Locksley walking the kids over, and we begged Lane can you please find that video so we could use it in the story. He looked, he really tried to find it.

“But those guys know, I mean Lane and Locksley had been in the same position and really Lane had something to do with more than a few of those coaches ending up there. I mean, he talked to Locksley about it. He talked to [Steve] Sarkisian about coming to Alabama. So there really is this Kevin Bacon, you know six degrees thing at Alabama. At the end of the day, it really is cool that Saban, and he had the equity, and you mentioned on the show, pulled this off, and that other coaches, and I think that Pete [Thamel] had mentioned this, are beginning to look at that sort of talent pool of fired head coaches to bring them into their program.”

Nevertheless, all the moments where it felt like the world was falling helped lead to second chances for every former head coach Nick Saban employed over recent season. Still, we’re going to need to have Lane Kiffin find the video of Mike Locksley — the now Ole Miss leader is sitting on gold.
