Gentry Williams taken to locker room early with injury vs. Houston
Oklahoma defensive back Gentry Williams was taken to the locker room with injury during the second quarter Saturday against Houston. Williams appeared to come down hard on his right shoulder on an earlier play and was checked out of the game.
He was looked at in the on-field tent prior to being taken back to the locker room for further examination.
With less than two minutes to go until halftime, it seems unlikely that Williams will return before the half is up. We’ll hope for further update on his status ahead of the third quarter.
Williams never returned to the game, but coach Brent Venables said postgame that he doesn’t believe the injury to be of serious nature. That’s good news for the safety, who who unfortunately struggled with injuries throughout his career as a Sooner.

Williams missed three games in 2023 due to injury but still managed to record 30 tackles, three interceptions and a fumble recovery in the 10 games he did play.

Brent Venables on Oklahoma’s performance vs. Houston: ‘We deserved to lose’
Oklahoma would hang on for a 16-12 victory against the Cougars, but not without several close calls. Sooners coach Brent Venables did not hold back in his assessment of the team postgame, admitting they were lucky to emerge victorious.
On a day where its offense struggled immensely, failing to score any points at all in the second half, the defense came up big late to force a safety. They also got the final stop of the game to secure the win.
“We certainly deserved to lose as well, but our guys did find a way,” Venables said. “Great job on the defensive play to create the safety. Offense did a really nice job until we lost our mind and didn’t play with the discipline.
“We deserved to lose because we did everything you could possibly do to give somebody a chance to win. But they did find a way to win there. Great job by the D again there on that last drive to make them use the clock and get off the field with a victory.”
