George Kliavkoff reveals where he stands on College Football Playoff expansion
Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff provided some interesting commentary on the potential expansion of the College Football Playoff.
One of the hottest topics in the sport, Kliavkoff revealed that he believes there’s five things that need to happen for expansion to be successful.
“I think that there are five things that need to happen, and they have to happen in a certain sequence,” stated Kliavkoff, via The Athletic. “No. 1 is we’ve committed to each other to collectively agree on the 365-day calendar for college football and its rules. That is a process that started the last time the CFP met and there’s been work done by all of the conferences in the interim. That is a conversation that we’re going to pick up and I hope make tremendous progress on next week in Park City.
“Once you figure that out, I think No. 2 is you’ve got to do the work related to what the format looks like, and particularly what the (automatic qualifiers) look like. My impression is that people are really, really OK with the format that was proposed, and now we’re really talking about what the AQs look like. No. 3 is revenue split. No. 4 is protecting the three contract bowls (the Rose, Sugar and Orange). And No. 5 is announcing it.
“What we did wrong last year is we put No. 5 first before we took care of the open issues. We have a process to go through. I think we can be done with the first one by the beginning or middle of the football season.”
While the expansion of the College Football Playoff hasn’t proven to be successful yet, George Kliavkoff believes there’s a path. The football world will keep a keen eye on what the future holds for the tournament.

George Kliavkoff forecasts changes across NCAA over next few years
In July of 2021, George Kliavkoff assumed the role of the commissioner of the Pac-12. Since taking over the conference, Kliavkoff has seen a plethora of changes and issues that have come up throughout the entirety of the NCAA.
Recently, Kliavkoff sat down with The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach to talk about his first year as the Pac-12 Commissioner, as well as forecast how the next few years could look across the NCAA.
On one hand, Kliavkoff understands that the NCAA has a number of topics being discussed currently, from NIL to the transfer portal to conference realignment to College Football Playoff expansion. All of those things grouped together has created a tough state of affairs for leaders across college athletics in itself.
“The one thing I’ll leave you with is this: I think two things are going on,” Kliavkoff told Auerbach. “One is, there’s this set of a half-dozen incredibly complex, interesting issues that are facing college athletics, like name image and likeness, transfer portal, conference realignment, the NCAA constitutional convention, the fallout from Alston, CFP expansion.”
