A year ago, Georgia routed Ole Miss 52-17 in Athens. That loss served as the barometer for the Rebels as they went all-in on the transfer portal, adding 26 players and revamping their defense.

Ole Miss has slipped twice this season, dropping games to Kentucky and LSU. But there is still a path to the College Football Playoff. Ole Miss debuted at No. 16 earlier this week in the CFP rankings and host No. 3 Georgia on Saturday in a de facto elimination game. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have won four straight since losing at Alabama.

Georgia at Ole Miss kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC. Sean McDonough and Greg McElroy are on the call.

Ole Miss is squarely back in the College Football Playoff picture with Saturday night’s 28-10 win over Georgia. Now at 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the SEC, if the Rebels win out they will be on track to make the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff.

And for Georgia, the Bulldogs are now 7-2 and 5-2 in the SEC. This is the first time since November 2020 that a team other than Alabama has beaten Georgia. Kirby Smart’s team needs to win out to have a shot for the CFP. That includes a matchup next weekend in Athens against No. 7 Tennessee.

Facing pressure on fourth down halfway through the fourth quarter, Georgia quarterback Carson Beck was intercepted by Ole Miss safety John Saunders. The Rebels take over on their 25-yard line with 7:22 remaining.

With Georgia driving down the field on its opening possession of the second half and inside the Ole Miss 10-yard line, defensive tackle JJ Pegues went down on the field with an injury. He’s been a factor in the rushing game this season, too, with six touchdowns. He walked off the field gingerly.

Georgia has just 69 yards at the half and only 20 yards rushing at the half. The Bulldogs lead the nation in drop catches, and that showed up again in the first half.

“They’re getting off the rock really good,” Kirby Smart told ABC’s Molly McGrath at the half. “They’re jumping our snap count pretty good. They’ve got really good defensive players. At the end of the day, you’ve got to be able to run the ball enough to keep them honest so they can’t pass-rush like that [and] pin their ears back.”

After starting its drive on its 1-yard line, Ole Miss capped off a 10-play, 63-yard drive with Caden Davis kicking a 53-yard field goal to put the Rebels up 16-7. Fighting through a left leg injury, Jaxson Dart is 9 of 14 for 131 yards.

Ole Miss EDGE Jared Ivey came up big on second down with an 8-yard sack. On 3rd-and-long, a holding penalty was called on Ole Miss, giving Georgia a first down and allowing the Bulldogs to stay on the field.

ESPN caught up with Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin during the first quarter break. Kiffin said Austin Simmons did a good job coming into the game in a backup role.

“He’s really tough,” Kiffin said. “Austin Simmons did a great job coming in. Jaxson, obviously, got hurt and then, threw the interception. Put ourselves in a bad spot, and we’ve played well since. We’ve got a lot of time to go here. Got to keep playing really good defense and stay balanced, like we are right now, and take advantage of checks vs. their pressures like the last one.”

Ole Miss running back Henry Parrish Jr. injured his left leg against Arkansas last week and was ruled out for Saturday’s Georgia game. He’s emerged as Ole Miss’ leading rusher posting 678 yards on 130 carries with 10 touchdowns.

Ole Miss will have to lean on Ulysses Bentley IV, Matt Jones and Domonique Thomas in the coming weeks. Thomas rushed for 41 yards on 10 carries against Arkansas. He’s posted 131 yards and a touchdown this season. Jones has gained 22 yards with three touchdowns while Bentley has 185 yards and a score. Former Notre Dame and LSU running back Logan Diggs is still recovering from an ACL injury but could return later this season.
