Georgia defensive players poised for breakout performances in Week 1
The downside of having such an elite unit is consistently having to replenish it due to turnover. However, Georgia still has more than enough to work with on defense to field another top one in the country this season.
DawgsHQ’s Jake Rowe spoke with Kaiden Smith on the ‘On3 Roundtable’ this week about potential breakout performers for the Bulldog defense this season. He didn’t have many specific answers, though, with just how many names he could pick from every spot.
“Yeah, I mean, there are a lot of guys. That’s the thing,” said Rowe. “I mean Georgia is kind of having a little bit of a changing of the guard in some areas on defense. I mean you can go first, second, and third level of the defense.”
The sole player that Rowe did name came in a redshirt sophomore on the defensive line with Christen Miller. That comes after he posted 14 tackles and a sack last year.

Now, although he considered a transfer, Miller returned and projects to have a significant season by Rowe.
“I mean, you look at the defensive line? Christen Miller had a tremendous offseason. He was, I would say, a factor last year but not one of their top guys and actually entered the transfer portal,” said Rowe. “I really like him to have a big season and Georgia needs that from him.”

As for the linebackers and edges along with the secondary, Rowe had all kinds of names to throw out. He sees multiple names at both of those levels that could become major names on the defense for the ‘Dawgs.
“You know, you look at outside linebacker and kind of pass rush? Damon Wilson is a guy, CJ Allen, Raylen Wilson, Jalon Walker. All there in that kind of front seven guys at linebacker,” said Rowe.
“They’re still settling positions in the secondary now with, you know, former four- and five-star guys who are impressive and competing hard for spots,” Rowe added.
Georgia isn’t lacking talent on defense at all. That’s so even after losing many pieces from four that were top-five in the country over the past half decade. It’s not a matter of if someone will now be next to join that group but just a question of who among them according to Rowe.
“Georgia is going to have a lot of breakout players on defense this year, I feel like,” said Rowe.
