Georgia Tech QB transfer Zach Pyron has committed to Minnesota, he announced on Wednesday.

Pyron’s plan to enter the NCAA transfer portal was reported on Dec. 2. Nine days later, he announced his intention to play under Gophers head coach PJ Fleck.

Pyron spent the past three seasons as a redshirt sophomore with the Yellow Jackets. He appeared in 19 games during his time there with four of those being starts for GT. That’s with him having been the backup quarterback for them in each of the past two seasons behind Haynes King.

In that collegiate career in Atlanta, Pyron is 88-155 (56.8%) overall in passing for 995 yards, five touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also has 79 carries for 271 yards and six more scores.

During his five full games, with a 1-4 record, Pyron is 79-140 (56.4%) for 910 yards, four touchdowns, and six interceptions with 53 carries for 182 yards and a score as well.

Pyron, a native of Pinson, Alabama, played high school football at Pinson Valley. He was the No. 422 overall recruit there as a three-star prospect in the 2022 cycle. That’s according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also rated as a Top-25 QB and a Top-20 player out of the state in the class.

The portal officially opened on Monday, Dec. 9, 2024. More than 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered their names into the NCAA’s transfer database during the 2023-24 school year. Removing those who withdrew or went pro, the final total sat at 2,707 transfers.

That means roughly 25 percent of all FBS scholarship players hit free agency in one year, per On3’s Pete Nakos.
