Grant Delpit has suffered another setback after returning to practice Wednesday. The Browns’ second-round pick of last year had missed the last two weeks of practice dealing with a hamstring injury. It is unclear when he reaggravated the injury but unfortunately for him, he was unable to finish practice Wednesday according to Pro Football Talk.

Delpit back at practice

Delpit appeared to be feeling confident and high in spirit answering questions from reporters before Wednesday’s practice. In one exchange with reporters, he opened up about if he felt behind in preparation for the season.

“I’m not behind at all,” Delpit said. “I’ve been preparing and working hard every day, making sure I’m working two times harder than the next person. That’s the mentality you gotta have, so I’m not behind at all.”

With all the time Delpit has missed dealing with this injury in training camp and preseason. It is not likely that the Browns we’ll try and rush him back. This is the second offseason derailed by injury for the 2019 Jim Thorpe award winner. Delpit missed all of last season with a ruptured Achilles.

“I’ve been taking it slow, just making sure I come back 100 percent,” he said. “It’s frustrating not being out there with my teammates, but when the time comes, I’m available.”

Plans for the Browns

The plans for the Cleveland Browns coming into this season were to have three safeties on the field together in the dime package. Delpit is considered the playmaker of the three safeties and outside of that package would be vying for the starting position against Rodney Harrison Jr. Harrison was traded to the Browns in September of last year in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2021 draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. In practice on Tuesday, Harrison was with the starters and Delpit lined up with the second team.

As it currently stands there is no timetable for when Delpit will return to practice. It appears as if the team is going to take this day by day. Not rushing and overdoing it is key for this kind of injury. The hope is that he will be ready and available for week one against the Kansas City Chiefs. Originally the goal is for Delpit to get time with the starters. However, with yet another setback to his hamstring injury, the best thing the Browns can hope for is that he comes back 1005 and is ready to contribute.
