There are always a few games that fans can circle ahead of the season that should have College Football Playoff implications. Former quarterback and current analyst Greg McElroy knows that. He also knows that plenty of games get overlooked too.

With that in mind, McElroy went on his show Always College Football, where he explained everyone knows the value of the game between Georgia and Alabama while pointing out a pair of under-the-radar games in Week 5 that could have CFP implications.

“Week 5, the biggest game of the weekend is Georgia-Bama. We know that,” Greg McElroy said. “But how about Louisville at Notre Dame? Notre Dame lost to Louisville last year, which extinguished any chance they had of getting into the College Football Playoff.”

That isn’t to say that a game like Alabama-Georgia won’t have CFP implications. Rather, it’s a game that most people expect to have some kind of impact there. However, Notre Dame-Louisville isn’t the same type of game in that regard for many fans.

Louisville isn’t the only ACC team with a big game in Week 5. Florida State, one of the favorites to win the conference and go to the CFP, is headed for an interesting road trip against SMU that McElroy is circling.

“Then, how about this one? Florida State on the road at SMU. SMU is dangerous now. If you look at SMU’s odds to win the ACC, they have the fifth shortest odds in the ACC,” McElroy said. “I’ve already told you. We know Miami, we know Florida State, we know Clemson. The fact that SMU is only two spots back of those three teams in odds to win the league is pretty surprising,” McElroy said.

“Their first year in the ACC and it might be a little bit of a unique road game there for Florida State when they go on the road to Dallas to take on the Mustangs.”

In 2024, the CFP is going to expand to 12 teams. That means a few different things. One of those things is that there’s going to be more access to the Playoff. So, teams with a loss or even two are more likely to make it and more regular season games could have major postseason implications.

Ultimately, Greg McElroy was undergoing a predictive process. As the season progresses, plenty of teams are going to prove to be worth keeping an eye on while others are going to fall off the radar as far as the CFP is concerned.
