The Florida State Seminoles came into the 2024 season looking to make a statement and compete for the College Football Playoff. However, after dropping four of their first five games of the season, that seems out of the question.

With that, as he explained on Always College Football, Greg McElroy believes that there is no more disappointing team in the country than Florida State.

“Florida State, there is no one in college football who is more disappointing than Florida State,” Greg McElroy said. “Coming in, season win total at 9.5 and to be currently 1-4, that one win coming against Cal in impressive yet less than impressive fashion, Florida State is struggling. It’s their offensive weapons. They have not been able to run the football. You have one of the most experienced offensive lines in the sport and they haven’t really been able to impose their will whatsoever, and a defense that has been pretty leaky at times against the run.”

The 2023 season saw Florida State win the ACC but also came with its frustrations as the Seminoles were left out of the Playoff. So, with the Playoff expanding to 12 teams, there was an expectation that the Seminoles would be a competitor for it.

“So, Florida State, as a result, coming in with sky-high expectations among pretty much everybody,” McElroy said. “They have fallen flat on their face and they are at a bit of a crossroads right now because it doesn’t look like it’s gonna get a whole lot better.”

One of the reasons for Florida State’s struggles this season has come down to the play of the quarterback position. Transfer DJ Uiagalelei has struggled, completing just 53.8 percent of his passes for 1,065 yards and four touchdowns to six interceptions. Now, on top of that, he’s injured and will miss time moving forward.

“DJ Uiagalelei has now been ruled out for the near term with an injury to his hand,” McElroy said. “Brock Glenn will step in so hopefully he can provide a bit of a spark, but, man, it is going to be an ugly one in Tallahassee if things keep trending in this direction.”

Despite all of those struggles, Florida State still has some time to turn things around this season. While they won’t be making it to their 9.5-win total, the Seminoles could still make a bowl game. That starts on Saturday with a challenging game against the Clemson Tigers.

Mike Norvell on Florida State new depth chart

Head coach Mike Norvell is taking a long look at his depth chart, sharing that just about every position is going to be an open battle moving forward for Florida State.

“Like, I really don’t care about a depth chart, to be honest with you. It really means nothing,” Norvell said.

“You can see it across the board on this wonderful depth chart that we put out. I mean there’s still – there’s a lot of positions that have to be better. We’re not playing very well. I mean I did suggest to put an OR on everybody. But, like, it’s, you know, not – at the end of the day, you know, we’ve got to go do it…. When we get out there on the field, better has to show up. If it doesn’t then there’s got to be somebody that takes advantage of the opportunity and goes and helps this football team win games.”
