Greg McElroy ranks Top 4 teams in SEC after Week 2
Following Week 2 of the college football season, analyst Greg McElroy broke down some of the top teams in the SEC on his show Always College Football. That included ranking the top four teams in the conference at this point in the season.
Ultimately, the power ranking that McElroy put together is an opinion, and ahead of listing these top four schools, he laid out the two basic things that he was basing them on. The first was that he was ranking teams based on what he feels they’re capable of doing moving forward. Then, the second was the strength of their record to this point in the season.
With that in mind, here’s a look at who Greg McElroy thinks are the four best teams in the SEC through two weeks of the season.
1. Georgia Bulldogs (2-0)
Greg McElroy didn’t shake the boat by putting the Georgia Bulldogs as the top team in his SEC power rankings. After all, that matches the current AP Poll, which has Georgia ranked as the top team in the country. That’s with good reason too, as the Bulldogs have been incredibly impressive so far this season.

Through two games, Georgia has outscored its opponents 82-6. That includes a 31-point win over Clemson on a neutral site. With that, they’re a favorite to both make it to the SEC Championship Game and make a deep run in the College Football Playoff.
2. Texas Longhorns (2-0)
For now, the Texas Longhorns are still second on McElroy’s SEC power rankings. However, he did emphasize that the Longhorns are closing the gap, especially with the win on the road over the Michigan Wolverines. In that game, the Longhorns were able to establish themselves as one of the best teams in the country, taking down the defending national champions.
That was an incredibly impressive win for Texas. They’ll just have to do a bit more to move up to the top spot. Certainly, the Longhorns will have their opportunities to do so too. That includes a game against the Georgia Bulldogs in October. For now, though, the Longhorns need to avoid a letdown game.

3. Tennessee Volunteers (2-0)
The Tennessee Volunteers have jumped out to a 2-0 start this season. That includes a massive 51-10 win at a neutral site over NC State, who was ranked at the time of the game. Now, the Volunteers find themselves ranked third in McElroy’s SEC power rankings.
In particular, McElroy praised the Volunteers defense for what they’ve been able to accomplish this season. At the same time, while the offense still has room to improve, it’s a unit that he feels has a very high ceiling. That’s made them a major threat in the SEC.
4. Alabama Crimson Tide (2-0)
Rounding out Greg McElroy’s top four teams in the SEC through two weeks of the college football season is the Alabama Crimson Tide. This comes in the first season for the program under new head coach Kalen DeBoer. It also comes despite struggling in Week 2 against USF.
As he explained, McElroy was impressed with how well the Crimson Tide were able to pull away from the Bulls late in the fourth quarter. That’s something they couldn’t do against USF last season. So, it shows growth from that team that went to the College Football Playoff.
There are plenty of other talented SEC teams that McElroy left out of the top four and could make it onto this list at some point in the future. That includes Ole Miss and Missouri, both of whom McElroy explained came down to the schedules they’ve played so far this season and being relatively untested to this point.
