Greg McElroy reveals his top five quarterbacks in the SEC

College football is just around the corner. One of the unofficial starts to the season is taking place in Atlanta, as SEC Media Days is already halfway over. Some of the country’s top players are in the conference, including quarterbacks.
Everyone seems to have differing opinions on who the conference’s top guys are. ESPN’s Greg McElroy gave it his best shot, putting together a top-five list on Tuesday via CFB Live on ESPN2.
McElroy’s list differs from one of his colleagues, Jordan Rodgers. You can check out his top five here but to what McElroy put together is down below. The party will get started in Norman.
1. John Mateer, Oklahoma

Quarterback expectations at Oklahoma are always sky high. If anything, appearances in New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony have become a bit of a tradition.
Many feel as if Mateer can be the next guy for the Sooners. A transfer from Washington State, McElroy has Mateer entering the SEC as the conference’s best quarterback.
2. Garrett Nussmeier, LSU
Nussmeier is a rare story in today’s college football, sticking in one spot for his entire career. Last season was finally his time to take over as the LSU starter. Now, he is hoping to take things to the next level.
Everyone involved with LSU has been honest about the expectations of winning a national championship in 2025. Nussmeier will certainly have to play like a top-two quarterback in order to accomplish those goals.
3. LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina
Another quarterback entering his second season as the starter, Sellers is catching plenty of eyes at the NFL level. His dual-threat ability is unlike anything seen in college football, let alone the SEC.

South Carolina will go as far as Sellers allows them to. McElroy is clearly high what Sellers brings to the table, ranking him ahead of two other impressive youngsters.
4. DJ Lagway, Florida

Arguably nobody inside the SEC has a higher ceiling than Lagway. The traits have been obvious from his recruiting days and now, Florida wants to see everything on full display.
Health was a big storyline during spring ball for Lagway. Appearing to be on schedule to be ready for the season opener, Lagway is ready to fully take over as the starting quarterback.
5. Arch Manning, Texas
Manning has been the darling of SEC Media Days and will continue to be throughout most of the season. Even so, McElroy is not ready to crown him at the top of his quarterback list.
Almost everything we have seen from Manning thus far has been against what could be considered limited competition. Week 1 may provide a ton of answers, as Texas travels to face Ohio State.
