Other than Texas, it seems as though no team in the Southeastern Conference has been safe from the upset bug during the 2024 college football season. According to ESPN’s Greg McElroy, anybody can beat anoybody in the SEC this year.

McElroy has been covering college football since 2014, and played in it as a quarterback at Alabama under Nick Saban before that. According to McElroy, this is the most interesting the conference been in a long time.

“This is the craziest version of the SEC I’ve ever covered,” McElroy said. “I have been in this business since 2014 and in the SEC, there was a very clear and obvious pecking order for a very long time. Okay, Vanderbilt was the bottom. Alabama was at the top for a vast majority, and then there for a little bit, like, maybe you had Georgia who was right there neck and neck.

“None of the middle of the SEC were capable of knocking off the top teams. None of the bottom of the SEC was capable of knocking off any of the top teams. Like that wasn’t going to happen. No way. No way whatsoever. Well, y’all that’s changed nowadays, this year in particular.”

McElroy went down the list. Obviously, Vanderbilt taking Missouri to the limit before beating Alabama at home and Kentucky on the road has sent a massive signal to the rest of the conference that the Commodores need to be taken more seriously under Clark Lea.

Arkansas and Kentucky have wins over top 10 teams on the road, but McElroy name-dropped Oklahoma, Auburn, Florida, South Carolina and Mississippi State as teams who he can see knocking off a ranked team in the SEC this season. A handful of those teams have already given top-tier SEC teams a run for their money in matchups this season, specifically South Carolina over the past few weeks.

“I’m telling you, man, the parity that I’ve seen in the SEC this year — I think it’s the craziest version of the SEC,” McElroy said. “I think it’s the deepest version of the SEC. And right now, the top of the SEC, outside of Texas, there is a little bit of uncertainty. So I’m feeling that we’ve had some upsets already, but we are poised to have a whole bunch for as the season continues to move forward.”
