There are few players in the history of college football who can do what Travis Hunter is currently doing for Colorado. The Buffaloes star excels while playing both sides of the ball as a receiver and a cornerback.

Hunter showed last year in his first season with the Buffaloes that he is a truly generational type of talent to finish with 721 yards receiving and five touchdowns while also recording three interceptions on defense. ESPN analyst Greg McElroy believes that Hunter has an opportunity to go down as one of the best college football players ever if he keeps it up.

“Watching Travis Hunter play 129 out of 131 snaps, just thinking to do that on any surface — let alone at altitude in Boulder, Colorado, where fatigue is more likely because of the oxygen levels in the air — is absolutely insane,” McElroy said on Always College Football. “…You don’t have to buy into the Colorado hype or anything like that. I’m not giving him the Heisman Trophy or anything like that. As you know, on our show, we do not say the word Heisman as it relates to one specific player until mid or late November.

“But if he can continue to do what he’s doing on both sides of the ball in some big games against quality competition, like this week against a Nebraska team most people think is really good on defense, it’s gonna be hard not to acknowledge his presence as not just one of the best in this year’s version of college football, but one of the best of all-time.”

Hunter put together one of the top performances of any player in Week 1 against North Dakota State to lead the Buffaloes to victory. He finished with seven catches for 132 yards and three touchdowns in addition to three tackles on defense.

Hunter is likely to be a top pick in the NFL Draft after this season, and there has been plenty of speculation on whether he will play offense or defense in the pros. McElroy offered his opinion on that matter as well, saying he believes his talents translate better to receiver.

“I go back and forth all the time,” he said. “I see all the numbers and all the finances that these receivers are getting. I think Travis Hunter’s best bet in the NFL is at wide receiver. I know corner has always been a super premium position, but receiver in the last two years has become increasingly more important than it’s ever been in the history of the sport.

“I think Travis Hunter’s a receiver in the league because his ball skills are absolutely off the charts. But just how great of a football player is ridiculous. All the different things he can do. The speed and how quickly he gets to full speed and his body control when a ball’s in the air is just off the charts good.”

For now, Hunter will look to continue building his legacy in college football. Colorado has a big game coming up this week against rival Nebraska, with the kick time set for 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
