All eyes were on the 2024 schedule release for the SEC last night considering it was the first edition featuring the likes of Texas and Oklahoma. Now, after some thought and consideration, Greg McElroy has determined which five matchups in ’24 are his favorite.

The Longhorns lead the way in McElroy’s ranking as they are part of three of his five choices. However, the top spot is owned by two of the best in the present in the SEC, as well as the nation, with the Georgia Bulldogs set to head to Tuscaloosa to play the Alabama Crimson Tide.

  1. Georgia at Alabama
  2. Texas at Texas A&M
  3. Georgia at Texas
  4. Alabama at Oklahoma
  5. Texas at Arkansas

Georgia and Alabama are, plainly and simply, two of the best current programs in college football, if not the two best period. McElroy said as much as he described the upcoming contest as, “an incredible matchup between two of the best in the sport.” Now, with the new schedule, a game that is usually reserved for the SEC Championship or College Football Playoff is on its way in the regular season.

From there, McElroy’s list gets Texas heavy. In all three matchups, though, the Longhorns have a form of rivalry. That conversation naturally starts with Texas A&M as, in McElroy’s words, ‘there’s no love lost’ between the two and that they ‘hate each other more than just about anybody.’ That’s why, with the news that Texas would eventually be in the SEC, their ensuing game with the Aggies was always going to be must-see TV.

After that, Texas’ other two ‘rivalries’ are on a smaller scale. With their game against Georgia at No. 3, McElroy notes how it will play as a sort of ‘Arch Manning Bowl’ considering the recruitment of the former five-star. He also picked their future game at Arkansas at No. 5 considering how much distaste that the ‘Hogs also have for the Longhorns.

With all the different games, new or old, a list like this could be put together in all sorts of way. Still, in McElroy’s eyes, these are the five best that fans should have their calendars marked for once it flips over to 2024.

The SEC Network did an excellent job of breaking down the different schedules for college football fans on Wednesday night. During the SEC Network’s special, Greg McElroy broke down the games which he’s most excited for during the 2024 season.

“Oh, I’m booking flights right now. If I have to adjust I’ll figure that out down the road. But I’m establishing that I have to be on a couple of these,” McElroy began. “Please, please, please let me have a few. Texas and Texas A&M naturally. How could it not be? It’s a phenomenal rivalry that we all grew up with and we’re so happy to have it back. And to have it under the umbrella of the SEC, makes it even more special.”

“Georgia at Texas. Need I say more? That I think, is a phenomenal one as well,” McElroy continued. “I love Alabama at Oklahoma. I know that was a game that was played back in the early 2000s. But as an Alabama guy we don’t talk about that era of Alabama football.”

“And then I’m also excited about Oklahoma and LSU. That game does an awful lot for me. Oklahoma, are they quite ready to rev their engine and compete at the top of the league? We’re gonna find out. And I think that road trip in of itself will be a great indicator of about whether or not Brent Venables team will be able to compete against the best in the most hostile environments.”
