Greg Sankey takes victory lap after new-look SEC dominance in WCWS, College World Series championships

SEC baseball and softball have become just as big for the league as anything else. Given the postseason success the conference has seen in each sport as of late, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey is now beaming like a proud father.

Sankey discussed the month that his conference has had on the diamond during an appearance on ‘The Paul Finebaum Show’ on Friday. He described how great it has been to have all four teams that have or will compete for the national titles in each respective sport be current or soon-to-be members of the Southeastern Conference.

“We’ve had a good June, a great June, actually,” said Sankey. “We’ve got two new members that met for the softball national championship – Oklahoma and Texas.”

“Then you jump into baseball. We have these high expectations. You never know what might happen. We had an equal split between us and the ACC in Omaha,” Sankey continued. “To watch the way Texas A&M and Tennessee have moved through their seasons but also moved through this tournament and now have this championship opportunity for both is really exciting.”

As the conference’s commissioner, Sankey usually has to play it safe and keep it courteous. However, with how each postseason played out, he has gotten to enjoy the thrill of seeing his teams play for championships amongst themselves.

“You spend a whole season in, like, neutral mode. When you arrive in the postseason, you anticipate the adrenaline rush that our fans enjoy because you’re pulling for a team. The great thing is you have the adrenaline rush all last week watching your teams compete, to earn the chance to play a national championship series,” Sankey explained. “It’s like a conference weekend at a much higher level.”

Earlier in June, No. 1 Texas and No. 2 Oklahoma met in the Women’s College World Series. That was after every team in the league made into this year’s postseason field. In the end, the Sooners won their fourth consecutive national championship. They swept the Longhorns in Oklahoma City to claim the final victory as far as meetings between the two as members of the Big 12.

Now, over this past week in Omaha, four teams from the league have been competing in the Men’s College World Series. They reached the title stage after 13 teams made the overall bracket this season. While Florida eliminated No. 2 Kentucky and then the Aggies eliminated the Gators, the championship series, which starts on Saturday, will still feature two conference members in No. 1 Tennessee and No. 3 Texas A&M.

Every commissioner of every conference wants to see their schools win championship after championship. Few have that luxury quite like Greg Sankey, though, with the SEC set to add another trophy to one program’s case in the next few days.

“It is rewarding,” said Sankey.
