The Wake Forest Demon Deacons are battling it out with the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday night. And they just tied the game up at 10-10 with 12:20 remaining in the third quarter. But the Demon Deacons suffered a major injury on their first offensive drive in the third quarter. Starting quarterback Hank Bachmeier had two different UNC defenders land on him as he was being tackled to the ground.

Bachmeier dropped to a knee for a minute, before being evaluated by medical staff and trainers. He then left the game. The announcers on the ACC Network broadcast believed it looked like he injured his left shoulder on the play. He was walked off the field with assistance. And backup quarterback Michael Kern is now in the game for the Demon Deacons.

Bachmeier spent several minutes in the medical tent in the third quarter. Eventually, the ACC Network cameras showed him warming up behind the Wake Forest bench. ACC Network sideline reporter Dana Boyle offered an update on Bachmeier’s injury status.

“It’s not a concern of his throwing arm for Bachmeier. It’s the left side of his body. He was rotating his left arm in a circular motion. He appeared to be in a little bit of pain. But he was getting reps in and warming up,” Boyle explained.

Bachmeier was seen on the Wake Forest sideline with his helmet and full uniform on, talking with the Demon Deacons training staff. Late in the third quarter, WFU had still held him out of the game. Running back Demond Claiborne had his calf wrapped by the trainer, but he continued to play on Saturday night. He had over 80 rushing yards and two touchdowns at the end of the third quarter.

There were plenty of different momentum swings in the third quarter on Saturday. Late in the third quarter with 30 seconds left, UNC led Wake 24-17. UNC running back Omarion Hampton had already piled up 181 rushing yards on 23 carries by the end of the third quarter. He became the ninth player in Tar Heel football history to rush for over 3,000 career rushing yards.
