Hawkeyes hold off a late Red Raiders rally to close out the weekend with a win
The Hawkeyes needed a win today. It would have been a huge missed opportunity, if they traveled down to Lubbock and got swept by the Red Raiders. Iowa got an early lead, lost it, took it back and then were tied for a while. However, when they needed it most, they got a couple of timely hits. Iowa defeated Texas Tech 10-9 on Sunday afternoon to salvage one win on the weekend after dropping the first two games.
The game started with a bang for the Hawkeyes. Michael Seegers was hit the first pitch of the game, while Kyle Huckstorf followed with an RBI double down the left field line. Just two pitches into the game and Iowa led 1-0. Huckstorf stole third base and scored, after the throw from catcher Hudson White went wide and into the outfield. They tacked on another run in the second inning to make it 3-0.
On the mound for the Hawkeyes, it was Marcus Morgan. After a 1-2-3 first inning, he got into trouble in the second. Morgan loaded the bases with no outs, but a Hudson White RBI groundout was all the Red Raiders could muster. However, Texas Tech didn’t have to wait long to break through with more runs.
Kyle Huckstorf hit a solo home run to make it 4-1 Hawkeyes in the third, but Tech responded in the bottom of the inning. Austin Green delivered an RBI single to cut into the lead, but Gavin Kash had more planned. His three-run home run gave the Red Raiders a 5-4 lead. Marcus Morgan went 4.0 innings, allowing five runs on three hits, while striking out three and walking four.
In the fourth inning, the Hawkeyes took advantage of four free bases from starter Kyle Robinson and reliever Taber Fast. Ben Wilmes drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game, while Cade Moss gave Iowa the lead back with a sacrifice fly to plate Chase Moseley. Michael Seegers added an RBI double in the sixth inning to give the Hawkeyes a 7-5 lead, but it was short lived.
Luke Llewellyn gave 2.1 good innings out of the bullpen, including three strikeouts to one walk, but two of his three hits allowed were home runs. Dillon Carter hit his third home run of the weekend in the sixth, while Kevin Bazzell tied things up at 7, with a home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh.
The game headed to the ninth tied at 7, but the Iowa offense had some late magic in their bats. Kyle Huckstorf reached base after his groundball kicked off SS Tracer Lopez. Huckstorf took advantage of Lopez slowly going after his mishandled grounder and hustled to second base. Brennen Dorighi followed with an RBI single to give the Hawkeyes an 8-7 lead. Chase Moseley added a two-run double later in the inning to make it 10-7 and it proved to be the biggest hit of the game.

Cade Obermueller made his weekend debut and struck out five over 2.2 innings, but had to work hard to nail down the win. Kevin Bazzell drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth and Austin Green clubbed a two-run home run to cut the lead to 10-9. Obermueller buckled down and retired three in a row, including two strikeouts to end the game.
Six Hawkeye hitters registered a hit, while Kyle Huckstorf (3), Brennen Dorighi (3) and Chase Moseley each had multiple hits. It was a better effort today at the plate, as Iowa was 7/20 (.350) with runners on base. They turned ten free baserunners into six runs.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: CF Kyle Huckstorf – 3 H, 3 R, 2 RBI, 1 2B, 1 HR
Huckstorf was a big part of the Hawkeyes getting off to a good start on the offensive side today. He had an RBI double and a solo home run in the first three innings of the game. He also scored the first run in the Hawkeyes three-run top of the ninth.
Up next for the Hawkeyes…
With the win, Iowa moves to 11-3 on the season. Up next for the Hawkeyes, they will welcome St Thomas to Iowa City for a midweek game on Wednesday.
