Had it not been for head coach Biff Poggi, not too many people would have been talking about Charlotte football in mid-July. Poggi went viral on social media during a moment at AAC Media Days, when the media only asked him three questions.

To say Poggi was not too happy would be an understatement. He went on a mini rant before slapping the podium a few times and walking off stage. Easily the best moment to come out of the event in Arlington, TX.

“That’s it? Three questions? Maybe that’s because you have us ranked last,” Poggi said at the podium. “That’s all you think of us. So, we get that message. Thank you.”

On3’s Andy Staples got to ask Poggi about the moment and wanted him to be truthful. In the heat of the moment, was he actually mad about the three questions, or did Poggi see an opportunity to create a moment and bring exposure to Charlotte?

“It was both,” Poggi said. “I was furious about the three questions. But it’s galvanized our football team. Look — believe it or not, we can read. We’ve seen all of the preseason predictions and the (Las) Vegas line of two games, and all that nonsense. That was the fire in the furnace that made us pure.”

Charlotte is entering year No. 9 of having a football program. All but once have the 49ers seen their record be a losing one, having an all-time tally of 29 wins and 62 losses. Making the Bahamas Bowl back in 2019 under first-year head coach Will Healy was the peak.

Not much has gone right for them and are hoping Poggi can turn things around. He’s off to a great start, getting people on social media interested in Charlotte’s 2023 season.

“I’ve been in 45 opening training camps for college as a player or coach,” Poggi said. “I’ve never seen anything like this. This is really cool.”

Poggi is getting his first opportunity in college football as a head coach. He spent the previous two seasons with the Michigan Wolverines, serving as the assistant head coach under Jim Harbaugh. The rise has been incredible, being a high school head coach as recently as the 2020 season.

Now, Poggi is a viral sensation. Fans around the country will love his personality and be cheering for the 49ers this fall.
