Andy Staples, Ari Wasserman weigh in on Deion Sanders, Colorado: This looks like 'Daddy Ball' | 09.11.24

Colorado took down rival Colorado State for the second straight season this weekend, defeating the Rams in a 28-9 win that was far less dramatic than last year’s double-overtime thriller. But nonetheless, the matchup was still filled to the brim with animosity between both teams.

Colorado State quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi and wide receiver Tory Horton grabbed headlines heading into Saturday’s game for their irreverent comments regarding the Colorado program and their close loss to the Buffaloes last season. Which Colorado head coach Deion Sanders made sure to mention to start his press conference following the game on Saturday.

“First of all, thank you all for being here,” Sanders said. “Wonderful game, personal game, heartfelt game, emotional game. They kind of make it like that, we just want to play some football. The disrespect was uncalled for throughout the week. A couple of their players took shots at the whole program and few of our players. So it is what it is, so we knew that coming into the game it was going to be a bit personal, and it was.”

According to Sanders, Colorado State’s antics went beyond just word of mouth. Revealing that the team’s wide receivers coach Jason Phillips was even on the receiving end of a physical run-in with the Rams pregame.

“I think one of our coaches, Coach Phillips, during warm-ups one of the guys ran into him and elbowed him, which is uncalled for. I just pray that our kids never act in that manner, because I know you guys would have a field day if they did,” Sanders said. “But I know you won’t say anything or do anything when the opposing team does that versus us, make derogatory comments during the week about our program.”

Sanders’ presence in Boulder has definitely come with a large amount of attention for the Colorado program and a fascinating dichotomy regarding the coverage of the Buffs. Which Sanders addressed one last time in the conclusion of his presser.

“Thank you all, I appreciate you. But I just want you to have the same passion when you see foolish things that you have when you see things on our behalf. I’m not asking you to jump on anybody, because I don’t condone that as well. But I just like balance, balance in any part of life is wonderful. God bless y’all, y’all get home safe,” Sanders concluded.

Colorado will be interesting to watch moving forward this season as they now dive their Big 12 schedule. But regardless of what happens on the field for our Buffaloes, there’s no doubt that off the field they’ll continue to be a topic of conversation.
