Champ Anthony left Auburn’s game yesterday on a stretcher following a significant injury to his leg. With that, Hugh Freeze expressed his thoughts for the junior defensive back.

Freeze opened his postgame press conference by speaking about Anthony. He said that it’s a tough loss for their team, especially with how he had been playing for and impacting their defense.

“Our thoughts are with Champ Anthony. Man, just a difficult injury,” said Freeze. “He was playing at a really high level for us. One of our leaders.”

Anthony suffered the injury to his left leg towards the end of the opening quarter against Arkansas. It was bad enough that the broadcast chose to not show the replay of the moment. He was then placed on the back of a cart with an air cast on it. The Tigers all then came out on the field to support him as they took him out of Jordan-Hare.

Anthony’s injury came right after he made a loud play with a tackle on Andrew Armstrong that got everyone’s attention. He also had a career-high of three pass deflections on the afternoon against the Razorbacks before leaving.

This is the second season at Auburn for Anthony. He spent one season at Tyler Junior College where he totaled 14 tackles and an interception in six games. He then transferred to The Plains and appeared in every game last season.

In total while there, Anthony has had 17 tackles and those three deflections in coverage for the Tigers. That includes a dozen tackles so far through a little over three games this fall.

No other update has come out regarding Anthony’s injury, whether the severity of it or the timeline for it. Still, Freeze says Auburn will do all that they can for him as he begins his recovery

“I know our medical team will take great care of him as he goes through his – whatever process it is that they need to repair that injury,” said Freeze.
