According to On3’s Joe Tipton, Texas A&M has landed a commitment from former Indiana forward Mackenzie Mgbako. New head coach Bucky McMillan is working on building the 2025-2026 roster and Mgbako will now be a big piece of the puzzle. A nice pickup for the Aggies.

Mgbako was the No. 56 player to enter this cycle, per the On3 Industry Transfer Portal Rankings. Looking just at small forwards, Mgbako ranked ninth at the position.

During his two seasons at Indiana, Mgbako was a consistent presence for head coach Mike Woodson. He played in 65 games and started in all but one of them. While Mgbako averaged 12.2 points per game in both campaigns, the shooting numbers were a whole lot better this past year.

Mgbako saw his field goal percentage go up by four in 2023-2024, totalling 43.7%. Finding more success inside the arc was the real key, as Mgbako made 51.1% of his two-point attempts. Shooting from deep remained around the same at 32.9%.

This marks the third commitment Texas A&M has gained out of the NCAA transfer portal. Zach Clemence will join the program via Kansas, while Jacari Lane will make a jump up to the SEC from North Alabama.

Since the Aggies have seen seven players hit the open market, McMillan is far from done. Mgbako joins the mix and will have a few more new teammates in the near future.

Many believe there is still a lot of untapped potential when it comes to Mgbako. He was a five-star prospect coming out of Gladstone (NJ) Roselle Catholic. Mgbako was the No. 12 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

“It is all about the jump shot,” On3’s Jamie Shaw said in a scouting report. “The release is consistent, high, and soft. Mgbako steps into it confidently off the catch and his balance is right on. Then you see the positional size at 6-foot-8/6-foot-9 and you see the attraction. Past the jump shot, Mgbako attacks closeouts in a straight line.

“His handle is average, his hips seem a little stiff, and he is a slightly above average athlete. Despite each of these being a concern moving forward, the shooting and the confidence are very real traits here and he rebounds his area. Mgbako has consistently performed at a high level is big settings.
