The NCAA Baseball Tournament selection show is 105 days away and the Iowa Baseball season doesn’t get underway until Friday in the Snowbird Classic. However, that does not mean it’s not fun to look at preseason predictions and see what publications think about the Hawkeyes tournament chances.

“We’re going to have to play consistent. From start to finish we need have consistency,” said Rick Heller. “We’re at a point with our program, where the big picture goals are to win the championship or win the (Big Ten) tournament and get to the regionals that way, where there’s no way people can say no.”

Two publications have Iowa making the Field of 64 for the first time since 2017. D1Baseball released their projection this morning and have the Hawkeyes landing as a #3 seed in the Stillwater Regional. Oklahoma State, Auburn and Ball State rounded out the projected regional. In all, they had three Big Ten teams making the tournament, including Maryland hosting a regional for the second straight season.

Baseball America also has released their projection for the season and they have Iowa as a #3 seed in the Louisville Regional. Louisville, Oregon and Wright State rounded out that projected regional. They also have three Big Ten teams making the tournament and have Maryland hosting a regional.

Keaton Anthony was not shy about his goals for the team this season saying, “I think we’re going to hit really well. We have really good arms up and down (the pitching staff), so I’m really excited…win the Big Ten championship, win the Big Ten Tournament, win a regional, win a super regional and win the College World Series. Big expectations.”

The Hawkeyes have reached the NCAA Tournament twice under Rick Heller. In 2015, Iowa won 41 games, which was the second most in a season in school history. They played in the Springfield Regional and made it to the regional final, where they fell to #10 Missouri State. Iowa made a second appearance in the NCAA Tournament under Heller in 2017, when the Hawkeyes won five games in four days to win the Big Ten Tournament. They played in the Houston regional and upset host #15 Houston 6-3 in the opener, but dropped the next two games.

Iowa opens the season on Friday in the Snowbird Classic against Indiana State. They face Quinnipiac on Saturday and Sunday to wrap up the opening weekend.
