Add one intriguing name to the list of candidates expected to interview for the open Chicago Bears head coaching job: Iowa State coach Matt Campbell.

According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, multiple sources have indicated Campbell will interview for the gig.

Matt Campbell has been the head coach at Iowa State since 2016, and he’s long been a highly coveted name on the coaching carousel. He has entertained interest from both college and NFL parties.

Most prominently, as the Chicago Tribune notes, the Detroit Lions made some overtures in 2021.

Matt Campbell has amassed a 99-66 record as a head coach, including a 64-51 mark at Iowa State. He has twice earned his way into the Big 12 Championship Game, including this season.

Iowa State went 11-3 this year, its best finish under Campbell.

Of course, there are plenty of names vying for the open job with the Bears. Among those reportedly interested or interviewing are Pete Carroll, Aaron Glenn, Ben Johnson, Mike Kafka, Drew Petzing and Mike Vrabel.

Suffice it to say, there will be some stiff competition for the gig, Matt Campbell included.

“It’s going to be a diverse group,” general manager Ryan Poles said, according to the Chicago Tribune. “This will be different backgrounds from offense, defense, special teams, college, pro. We’re turning every stone to make sure we’re doing this the right way.

“There’s going to be some names that you don’t expect that are going to surprise you because we’re digging deeper than we ever have before.”
